Choral Synagogue Welcomes Multifaceted Crowd on Tolerance Day

November 17, 2011 By Tamar Runyan

S. Petersburg, Russia’s Great Choral Synagogue welcomed hundreds of guests during the city’s Sunday commemoration of the International Day of Tolerance.
Visitors of all backgrounds toured the synagogue, enjoyed kosher food, and peppered Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Mendel Pewzner, the city’s chief rabbi, with questions on an array of topics. At the close of the event, the Kiev-based Pushkin Klezmer Band performed for the crowd.
“We wanted to give everyone a chance to see the S. Petersburg synagogue and get a better sense of the world of Jewish culture,” said Mark Grubarg, local Jewish community chairman. “We do not want people to think that the synagogue is something that is closed.”
The visitors included many – young and old – who had never been to synagogue before.
“All my life, I myself said we ought to go to the synagogue,” said one guest. “And then I heard an ad on the radio and thought, ‘After all, I am a Jew, aren’t I?’ So here I am today.”
